The wait is over. The most widely anticipated meatless burger is finally coming to America: McDonald’s just announced that its first plant-based burger – the McPlant – will be available at select restaurants starting on Wednesday, November 3rd.

McDonald’s has been testing the McPlant, made with Beyond Meat abroad, but had not said when it would bring the menu item to the US until now. The McPlant features a plant-based patty made from a combination of pea protein, rice protein, mung bean protein, potato starch, apple extract, and other ingredients and topped with pickles, onions, tomato, lettuce, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and a slice of (non-vegan) American cheese.

“This particular test will help us understand how offering a burger with a plant-based patty impacts the kitchens in our restaurants,” McDonald’s stated in its announcement of the McPlant test in the US. “[The McPlant] has the iconic taste of a McDonald’s burger, because it is one.”

The McPlant will be available for a small-scale limited trial before it rolls out to more locations. The company announced that only eight locations will feature the plant-based burger starting next month. The select locations will be located in Irving, Texas; Carrollton, Texas; Cedar Falls, Iowa; Jennings, Louisiana; Lake Charles, Louisiana; Manhattan Beach, California; and El Segundo, California. There is currently no announcement for further distribution.

McDonald's and Beyond partner up

The partnership with Beyond Meat worked to develop a plant-based patty that would be perfectly designed for a classic McDonald’s burger. While the burger patty is completely plant-based, McDonald’s clarified that the mayonnaise and cheese will not be vegan, but the menu item can be ordered without either ingredient. The patty will also be cooked on shared surfaces with animal-based products.

The US test closely follows the chain’s McPlant launch across the UK and Ireland. The company rolled out its plant-based patty in Coventry in late September before eventually distributing the new menu item across more locations in early October. While the US version does not feature full plant-based ingredients, the UK variation offered a vegan special sauce and vegan cheese in place of the dairy products. After earning the UK Vegetarian Society’s official vegan certification, there is a possibility US consumers could see the fully vegan McPlant Variation.

“We’re so pleased to be finally launching McPlant in the UK and Ireland. As with every McDonald’s offering, we take our time to ensure it meets the highest standards and is something that all our customers will enjoy,” Chief Marketing Officer at McDonald’s UK and Ireland Michelle Graham-Clare said during the release last month.“We are always looking for different ways to innovate and meet our customers’ needs, and with McPlant, we have a delicious plant-based burger that will appeal to everyone. Whether you’re vegan or just fancy a plant-based patty, we’re confident you will enjoy the McPlant.”

Earlier this year, Beyond Meat and McDonald’s announced a three-year partnership dedicated to expanding the fast-food corporation’s plant-based offerings. The company officially announced its international McPlant campaign to develop plant-based burgers for McDonald’s locations worldwide. The McPlant burger is the partnership’s first collective product.

“We are proud to enter into this strategic global agreement with McDonald’s, an exciting milestone for Beyond Meat, and look forward to serving McDonald’s as they bring expanded choice to menus globally,” Beyond Meat CEO Ethan Brown said in a statement to VegNews. “We will combine the power of Beyond Meat’s rapid and relentless approach to innovation with the strength of McDonald’s global brand to introduce craveable, new plant-based menu items that consumers will love.”

The McPlant has been tested internationally for months. Prior to its UK launch, the McPlant was offered at select locations across Europe, including Denmark, Austria, and Sweden. The test locations featured a menu item similar to the US McPlant, which does not offer the vegan special sauce or dairy-free cheese. However, the Swedish McDonald’s branch felt optimistic about the partnership.

“McPlant offers a completely new taste experience, but still with the same iconic McDonald’s taste as usual,” Marketing Manager at McDonald’s Sweden Staffan Ekstam said. “Our herbal burger is for all our guests – both those who are eager to try something new and as an additional alternative for all the guests who today eat flexitarian.”

McDonald’s is late to enter a rapidly growing fast-food burger market. Rivaling fast-food companies such as Burger King and Fatburger partnered with Impossible Foods. Before partnering with McDonald’s, Beyond Meat released a plant-based patty with Carl’s Jr. The rise of plant-based burgers signifies a growing demand and acceptance of vegan variations at some of the most eaten food establishments in the world.

Fast-food restaurants have finally got the memo that their customer base isn’t just coming through for a burger, fried chicken, or a beef taco. Many now have plant-based foods and are coming up with creative, delicious ways to get more greens on the menu. Here are the 6 best fast-food chains with plant-based options on the menu.

1. Burger King

Turns out there’s a lot more to rely on than a salad if you’re eating plant-based. Burger King has the Impossible Whopper featuring a meatless patty as well as a few secretly vegan options such as the French Toast Sticks and Hashbrowns.

2. White Castle

Known for its mini square-shaped sliders, this hamburger chain jumped on the plant-based bandwagon at some participating locations. You can find an Impossible Slider on some White Castle menus.

3. Del Taco

This was the first national Mexican fast-food chain to offer Beyond Meat at the company’s 580 restaurants across the country. Del Taco has the Beyond Avocado Taco on the menu along with the Epic Beyond Original Mex Burrito and Avocado Veggie Bowl.

4. Carl's Jr.

Another brand synonymous with beef burgers, Carl’s Jr. offers several plant-based options for veggie and plant lover such as Beyond Famous Star Burger and Guacamole Thickburger.

5. Taco Bell

This fast-food restaurant may have been one of the first you frequented while transitioning to plant-based eating. That’s because Taco Bell has eight million vegetarian combinations and sells 350 million vegetarian items a year through menu substitutions or ordering off their vegetarian menu. In fact, they were the first quick-service restaurant to offer American Vegetarian Association (AVA) certified food options.

6. Starbucks

From the time it started offering breakfast sandwiches in 2006, the coffee conglomerate became a competitor in the fast-food space. You can get your favorite hot and cold beverages made with almond, coconut or oat milk but there are also plant-based food options available such as the Baja Black Bean Veggie Wrap, bagel with vegan cream cheese and Impossible Breakfast Sandwich.
