There Will Be No Meat Served at the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards

The 77th annual Golden Globes Awards will serve a fully plant-based meal for the first time in the event’s history, the AP reports.

Guests at this year’s ceremony will feast on king oyster mushrooms scallops and wild mushroom risotto. It will be paired along with roasted baby purple and green Brussels sprouts and carrots and a chilled golden beet soup.  

“If there’s a way we can, not change the world, but save the planet, maybe we can get the Golden Globes to send a signal and draw attention to the issue about climate change,” Hollywood Foreign Press president Lorenzo Soria said in a statement. “The food we eat, the way we grow the food we eat, the way we dispose of the food is one of the large contributors to the climate crisis.”

The decision was made just two weeks before the show, but Soria says the hotel has been able to accommodate the request and has embraced the challenge. “They started to experiment with how to do plant-based meals that was not just their symbolic steps, but also something that guests will enjoy.”

The move comes as a growing number of Hollywood A-listers are speaking out against eating meat in order to combat climate change. The show’s host this year is comedian Ricky Gervais, an outspoken advocate for decreasing meat consumption. Two of this year’s Best Actor nominees, Leonardo DiCaprio (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”), are also advocates for decreasing meat consumption.

DiCaprio recently urged his Instagram followers to reduce meat consumption to combat the fires in the Amazon. And Phoenix, a longtime advocate for animal rights, frequently uses his platform to bring attention to the issues related to factory farming.

The awards ceremony airs on NBC this Sunday, live from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
